How a La Paz Whale Shark Tour Works
Four things to settle before you book: where you sleep, the weather, the time slot and the rules in the water.
Decide Where You Sleep
From Los Cabos the whale sharks are a 10-hour day: about two hours each way by road, with hotel pickup. From La Paz they are a few minutes from the malecón, and the small-group swims take about three hours.
Book Early in Your Stay
Strong winds close the bay to all boat tours, and operators usually know a day or two ahead. Booking for your first days leaves room to move the swim. Most tours here refund in full up to 24 hours before departure.
Expect an Assigned Time Slot
Boats enter the whale shark area in shifts set for each day, so the start time can move and you may wait on the water for your turn. Several operators confirm the slot the day before.
Follow the Rules in the Water
Mexico's whale shark standard, NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018, allows 5 swimmers per guide, at least 2 m from the head and 3 m from the tail, no touching, no flash and no diving under the shark. Use biodegradable sunscreen or none.

The Guide
Whale Sharks in La Paz: How the Swim Actually Works
A short season, a strict set of rules and a choice between a 10-hour day from Cabo and a three-hour boat from the La Paz marina.
Every winter, young whale sharks gather to feed in the southern Bay of La Paz, in the shallow, plankton-green water off the El Mogote sandbar. They are mostly juvenile males under 8 meters long, according to research on the Gulf of California aggregations, and they feed close enough to town that a swim takes about three hours from the marina. Mexico treats the area as a whale shark refuge: only licensed boats go in, they go in shifts, and swimmers stay at the surface beside the shark.
Where things stand, October 2026
- The 2026-27 calendars open on 15 November. The main operators list daily departures from 15 November 2026 to 15 April 2027 on Viator, and Sunrider’s budget boat runs from 4 December to 15 March on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays (checked October 2026).
- The swim can close early. CONANP halts swimming when monitoring counts five whale sharks or fewer in Zone 1 of the refuge. Swimming was suspended in February 2023, paused in February 2024, and closed from late January 2025 (CONANP notices reported in the La Paz press, checked October 2026). The 2025-26 season opened in November 2025 with seven sharks counted and ran into April 2026.
- Wind closes the bay. On days of strong wind the port closes the bay to all boat tours. Operators usually know a day or two ahead and move you or refund you.
The short answer
If you are staying in Los Cabos, book the full day in the booking box on this page. It takes about 10 hours and costs from $259 a person, rated 4.9 from 1,141 reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor (checked October 2026). Wetsuit, snorkel gear and drinks are included; the minimum age is 8.
Check dates for the day from Cabo
If you are staying in La Paz, you do not need the transfer. The marinas are a few minutes from the feeding area, and a small-group swim takes three hours. MeXplore’s tour takes at most 9 guests per boat with a marine biologist, includes the federal permit, the conservation donation, a 3 mm wetsuit and GoPro photos, and costs from $175.88, rated 4.9 from 649 reviews.

What happens on the water
The boats leave from the malecón or the marinas on the La Paz waterfront and run a few minutes across the bay to the refuge. Entry works in shifts: each boat gets a time slot for the day, and in the busiest weeks you can wait on the water for your turn. Several operators confirm the slot the day before, and in peak weeks the wait for a slot can run from 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Once a shark is found, the guide drops a group of up to five swimmers ahead of it and to one side, and you swim alongside as it passes. Mexico’s whale shark standard, NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018, sets the distances: at least 2 meters from the head and 3 meters from the tail. No touching, no flash, no selfie sticks, and no diving down under the shark. A boat may stay with one shark for at most 30 minutes, then moves on. The rules guide has the rest, and how to tell a licensed boat from an unlicensed one.
The water in February is about 20 °C (68 °F). Wetsuits are included on almost every tour, but the ride back in the wind is cold; bring a sweatshirt and a towel.

| Best for | One free day in Cabo, no rental car | A night or two in La Paz, more time in the water |
Spending a night in La Paz turns the whale sharks into a morning and leaves the afternoon for the malecón, Balandra beach or Isla Espiritu Santo, where the sea lion colony is the other big swim in the bay. The Cabo guide sets out the trade in more detail, and the price guide shows what each price level includes.
When to go
The juvenile aggregation is largest from November to January, according to a 12-year abundance study of the bay, and the swim season runs from about mid-November to mid-April. December and January are the safest months to book; late March and April carry the most risk of thin numbers or an early closure. The season guide goes month by month. If you are traveling in summer instead, whale sharks gather on the Caribbean side, off Holbox and Isla Mujeres, from about May to September.
For a longer day in the water, the whale sharks and sea lions guide compares the combination tours, and the safety guide covers swimming ability, children and seasickness.

La Paz Whale Shark Tours: Questions Before You Book
The questions people search before swimming with whale sharks in La Paz, answered from Mexico's rules, the season record and the tour listings.
Yes, from roughly November to April, on a licensed boat. Juvenile whale sharks gather to feed in the southern Bay of La Paz, near the El Mogote sandbar, a short boat ride from the malecón. Swimming is allowed only with operators authorized by the federal environment agencies, in snorkel gear at the surface, under Mexico's whale shark standard NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018. Tours leave from the La Paz marinas, or from Los Cabos with a transfer, like the full day from Cabo on this page.
November to January is the peak; the official window runs from October to April. A 12-year abundance study of the bay found the juvenile aggregation is largest between November and January. Most tours run from about mid-November to mid-April, and January and February are also good months in most years. Late in the season the sharks thin out, and the swim has been suspended early in some years, so a December or January trip is the safest choice. The season guide has the month-by-month detail.
Not in the 2025-26 season, but suspensions do happen, and they follow a fixed rule. Under the management plan, CONANP halts swimming when monitoring counts five whale sharks or fewer in Zone 1 of the refuge. Swimming was suspended in February 2023, paused in February 2024, and closed from late January 2025 (CONANP notices as reported in the La Paz press, checked October 2026). The 2025-26 season opened in November 2025 with seven sharks counted, and reviews of La Paz swims run into April 2026. The 2026-27 season opens on 15 November 2026 on the operators' calendars, and as of October 2026 there is no status for it yet. Check with your operator before you travel; the season guide explains how to read it.
About $110 to $176 a person from La Paz, and about $259 from Los Cabos with the transfer (Viator, October 2026). The budget boats start around $110 but leave the dock and conservation fees to be paid in cash. Small-group swims with a marine biologist cost about $157 to $176 and usually include the permit, wetsuit and photos. Full days that add the sea lions and Balandra run about $231 to $275. The price guide sets out what each level includes.
Yes, but it is a long day. La Paz is about two hours by road from Cabo San Lucas, and the whale sharks are in the Bay of La Paz, not off Cabo. Cabo Adventures' day trip, the tour on this page, picks you up at your Los Cabos hotel, spends the middle of the day on the water and includes lunch, about 10 hours in all. If you can spend a night in La Paz, a three-hour swim from the marina costs less and leaves the afternoon free; the Cabo guide compares the two.
Yes for anyone comfortable in open water with a mask and snorkel. Whale sharks are filter feeders that eat plankton and small fish; they are not a danger to swimmers, and the rules keep you at least 2 m from the head and 3 m from the tail. The real risks are ordinary sea risks: chop, cold water from November to March, seasickness and the occasional small jellyfish. Several tours set a minimum age of 8. The safety guide covers who should skip it.
About three hours from the La Paz marinas, six to nine hours if you add the sea lions, and about 10 hours from Cabo. The whale shark area is a few minutes from the marina, so most of a three-hour tour is search, swim and wait. Boats enter in assigned shifts, and a single boat may stay with a shark for at most 30 minutes, so the start time can shift and you may wait on the water. The day from Cabo adds about two hours of road each way.
Five swimmers per guide, at least 2 m from the head and 3 m from the tail, and no touching. Mexico's standard NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018 also bans flash, selfie sticks, riding or feeding the shark and non-biodegradable sunscreen, and it defines the activity as surface swimming with snorkel, mask and fins, so freediving under the shark is out. Boats must keep 50 m apart and stay with one shark for at most 30 minutes. The rules guide lists the rest.
You need to be comfortable in deep water, not fast. Wetsuits and life vests make you float, and the guide sets the pace. Juvenile whale sharks cruise slowly while they feed, but you will kick to keep alongside, and the water can be choppy. Sunrider takes good swimmers aged 8 and up, and most tours rate the swim as needing a moderate level of fitness. Most tours do not take pregnant travelers or anyone with heart, neck or breathing problems.
A towel, a warm layer for the boat, biodegradable sunscreen and a swimsuit. Wetsuits and snorkel gear are included on almost every tour in La Paz. From November to March the wind on the boat is cold after a swim, so pack a sweatshirt. Bring cash for tips, and for the dock and conservation fees on the tours that leave them out. A GoPro is allowed; flash and selfie sticks are not.
No. In the whale shark refuge the activity is snorkeling at the surface only. The federal standard defines the swim as surface swimming with mask, snorkel and fins, without breath-hold dives, so freediving is not allowed either. Scuba diving in La Paz happens elsewhere in the bay and around Espiritu Santo, where the sea lion colony is the main dive and snorkel site; the Espiritu Santo tours go there.
On the Caribbean side, off Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Cancún, from about May to September. That is the opposite season to La Paz, so the two do not compete: Baja in winter, the Caribbean in summer. For a winter trip, La Paz is the place, and the sharks there are close enough to town for a half-day trip.
